As a fellow enthusiast of healthy conv...Dr. Lewis,

As a fellow enthusiast of healthy conversation, I was trained in the art by one of the best conversationalists I have ever known: my mother.

She offered the best advice I have ever received, and it has helped me to this day. I believe that the number one thing you can do to contribute to a healthy conversation is to ask questions. The second most important thing is to listen carefully to the response so as to ask a thoughtful, follow up question that relates to what they just said.

I think what is most damaging is the belief that in order to have a healthy conversation you must have something to bring to the table. Wisdom, experience, humor, knowledge - something you can impart to the other person. I heartily disagree... Some of the best conversations I have experienced are when both parties are equally invested in learning more about the other person.

There is a time and a place to share our stories, thoughts, and counsel with others, and there is a time when it is simply better to ask questions and actively listen.

I wish more of my generation would learn this at a young age. At 21, it's hard to be the only one ignoring the cell phone under the table. Good conversation and communication is not about what you can give, except for your undivided attention and respect.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, sir!
Emma ArmitageAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2238119413947330784.post-79918839615336889902013-08-27T07:38:36.237-05:002013-08-27T07:38:36.237-05:00I am glad you have been blessed by my procrastinat...I am glad you have been blessed by my procrastination. :-)Dr. Gerry Lewishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08271300095492900409noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2238119413947330784.post-76061810705411995162013-08-17T01:09:12.786-05:002013-08-17T01:09:12.786-05:00My favorite line: “It needed to be painted then. I chose not to slurp, but I really enjoyed my two soup selections and the chili. I should have posted a photo on your wall or texted it to you... but I was too busy eating soup.

I remember as a teenager hearing in church that it was improper to raise our hands in worship. We might be considered "charismatic". I had trouble understanding why it was good to have charisma but not good to be charismatic. It took me many years as a worship leader to feel comfortable even making hand gestures. I am better at it now, but still more reserved than I may eventually grow to be. I am still careful to teach the family to not get merely caught up in the music but in God that is the music.
